Good or God

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6

Have you ever chosen something simply because it looked good? How can something that looks good be bad for you, right? We choose to buy things, do things, or not to do things simply because in our own eyes they are either good or bad. Sometimes we base our viewpoint of good verses bad by the way we are taught, by life experiences, or by the way they feel. We view this as our moral compass. Things in life are either good or bad. We think we can never be led into temptation because we know the difference between the two. But, what if the real question we should be asking ourselves is, "Is it good or is it God?" We can turn almost anything these days into something good. For example, when we go grocery shopping most of us automatically look for the sales. We look for the cheapest food, the cheapest personal care products, the cheapest household products. It's all about being a good steward with our money, right? But, when you look a little deeper you will find that the money you just spent on food bought lots of food, but non of it had any nutritional value. The personal care products and household products were filled with toxic ingredients that slowly kill your body. But, it was cheap so it was a good choice, right? God created all the food we need. He also created our bodies to care and heal themselves when we properly take care of them. So when we are constantly filling them with junk and calling it a good choice because we were good stewards with our money can we even say that we're being a good steward at all? God had given Adam and Eve access to all of the fruit trees in the garden. It wasn't that there were only two trees for them to choose from. There were probably hundreds. Yet, Eve was tempted to go eat the fruit off of the one tree that God had told her not to. She wasn't tempted to go to this tree because she was rebellious or because it looked like something bad that she wanted. No, the Bible actually says in Genesis 3:6 that the reason Eve ate fruit from the tree that God told her not to eat from was because it looked good. It looked good. We do it all day long. We choose good over God. God gives us all the food we need through animals, fruits, and vegetables and yet we go in the grocery store thinking that saving money will be better than taking care of our bodies. And we justify it because we're saving money. This is just one scenario of how we choose good over God. There are hundreds of different ways every day where we choose our own way over God because it looks like the better option. Where are you choosing good over God this week? The temptation we face in life never comes through something that looks bad. It's tempting because it looks good. It's tempting because it makes us feel good. We pray that God would reveal the areas in your life that tempt you to choose what looks good. We pray that you would have the courage to say no so that God can release all HIS goodness into your life. May your eyes stay fixed on Him as you choose God over good this week.
